I’m the owner of Gemstone Gymnastics, along with my husband Chris. I want to tell you a little about myself and why I started this gym.
It started out as my vision, but it was never about me. It was always about YOU, the gymnasts, the gym moms and dads, and the staff.
I fell in love with gymnastics as a little girl, and by the time I saw the 1996 Olympics on TV I was hooked! Who remembers Kerri Strug and that famous one footed vault? I stayed in gymnastics or some form of it (cheerleading, dance) throughout my childhood. In college, I found gymnastics again, in a new form, as a coach.
I started coaching at a club in Sacramento, my home town, that had a philosophy centered around caring for the whole child, not just their gymnastics skills. This philosophy had a HUGE impact on my students. I was amazed! By teaching kids skills through games, play, and positive discipline, they were learning so much, and so quickly. They weren’t just doing better cartwheels, they were becoming better people.
The positivity didn’t end with the kids-I noticed how their parents felt it too. I had parents telling me that their child had gained so much self esteem from gymnastics, that they were performing better at school, they were happier at home, and because of this their entire family was feeling the good gym vibes! I knew gymnastics was great, but I didn’t realize how important it was. I learned then that it really is a tool to improve lives. I am forever grateful to Tricks Gymnastics for introducing me to this philosophy!
After many years of coaching, I honed some very special skills on how to reach children, and how to impact their lives. What I was doing was working, and I wanted to do it on a bigger scale.
I had a vision for a gym, a dream really, of a place where kids of all ages and abilities were given the opportunity to learn life skills through gymnastics. Gymnastics would teach them things like how to set a goal and achieve it, how to love fitness, how to conquer fear, and how to feel great in their own skin. How amazing would the world be if every adult you know had these attributes? I think the entire world would change.
The dream includes a very special staff of people who love children. A staff that is respected, treated like the professionals that they are, and are paid well to encourage long lasting careers where they can perfect their craft. The dream is for gym families to experience the highest levels of professionalism, quality instruction, and fairness from the company. The dream is for the coaches, parents, and gymnasts to all be working towards the same common goal-to support and develop the whole child.
After what seemed like an eternity of planning, the dream is now a reality-Gemstone Gymnastics is that dream realized, and we continue to work towards fulfilling the dream every single day, with every single child. We are proud to offer gymnastics classes serving Allied Gardens, San Carlos, Del Cerro, Kensington, La Mesa, Grantville, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, and surrounding communities in San Diego, California. I can’t wait for you to join us!
